It is a sin to give

I read this article in Philippine Inquirer written by an OFW. He raised a question if it is a sin if you stop sending financial support to your parents or siblings who in fact could equally find job and support themselves.

It is dawn on me that it is becoming a bad habit for our relatives to partially or totally depend on us as OFW. The will to be independent and courage to stand and support themselves financially, if not dwindled, had completely erased in their minds. But, we OFW are also part of the problem. We tend to give our parents and siblings excessive care by showering them with money until they abuse our generosity to the point of wholly relying on us.

Far worst, our family sees us like a goose that lays golden eggs. They seldom think or care about our situation, health and condition in working overseas. This is also one of the intricate problems OFW’s normally face. Despite of this tribulation, we are still here, away from our home, fighting to survive in a harsh situation.

Let us go back to the question. I have no idea if it will be a sin if you stop supporting your relatives. But one thing I know it will be hard for us to ignore their plea even we know that the requested money will be just used in a meaningless manner.
